Designing MBIs

Market-based instruments (MBIs) are very useful for encouraging land managers to participate in natural resource management (NRM). While they are not appropriate for every NRM situation, when they are used properly to target specific problems, they can be very effective. A MBI will perform best if you put careful thought into selecting the right one and tailoring it for the specific situation.

With this in mind, this section of the site provides some introductory information on designing and implementing MBIs. The fact sheets, case studies and guidelines in the publication area will also provide you with more detailed information. You can also use the Decision Support Tool to assist you in accessing your program needs.

This information will enable you to contact and MBI expert with the confidence to outline your program's design needs. Your new MBI knowledge will also assist the consultant to be able to help tailor a program to suit the needs of your organisation.

By becoming member of this website,  you can use the Little Orange Book section of this website which includes MBI consultants and their profiles, while the members forums area will provide you with an opportunity to network with other MBI practioners and consultants to assist you in designing an MBI program.

Using the forums you will be able to generate a market for attracting experts to bid the development of your MBI programs. An open forum could also be used to get advice from other practioners or to share your own learnings with others. Consultants can also use open forums on new instruments to attract the interest of potential clients.

Once you have completed your project, it would benefit future MBI programs if you added a case study, video, blog or podcast of your learnings to the members area of this website.
