Government agencies undertaking MBIs

The Designer Carrots program was developed to support the growing area of market-based instruments (MBIs) for natural resource management (NRM) in the Australian, State and Territory governments.

The Designer Carrots program is a joint initiative of the Australian, State and Territory Governments funded through the National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality (NAPSWQ).

The Australian Government has supported the development of MBIs through a National MBI Pilot Program which is funded through the NAPSWQ.

Most of the State and Territory governments have also developed or supported the development of MBI programs, such as the BushTender program in Victoria or conservation banking in New South Wales.

Local governments are also utilising MBI principals, for example through rate rebate programs.
