The National MBI Pilot Programs

The National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality National MBI Pilots Program aimed to increase Australia's capacity to use market-based instruments (MBIs) in managing natural resource issues, in particular to address the problems of salinity and water quality.

From April 2003 the Australian, state and territory governments committed up to $10 million over two rounds to the National MBI Pilot Program.

Results from the first round of the program indicated that MBIs such as competitive tenders, are a cost effective way of providing incentives to farmers to address a wide range of environmental problems including water quality, biodiversity decline and salinity. Round 2 of the program ran from mid 2006 to June 2008, with final reports available.
